Maria Del Angel has been a resident of Estrada Courts Development for 20 years. For the past 15 years she has been an active member of her community working with the youth and families in the development, as well as city-wide. She served as President of the Estrada Courts Resident Management Corporation for six years until her appointment to HACLA’s Board of Commissioners in 1998. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Housing Authority’s Tenant Relations and Finance Committees.
Commissioner Del Angel is a Teen Pregnancy Prevention coordinator for Soledad Enrichment Action, Inc. (“Soledad”). Soledad provides high-risk youth and their families alternatives to gangs, drugs and violence by providing them with alternative high school and parenting education services, mental health therapy, drug and alcohol counseling, field trip and after-school tutoring including arts and crafts activities. Brother Modesto Leon, a Christian Missionary, and mothers from East Los Angeles whose sons had been killed by gang violence founded Soledad in 1972.
Del Angel assisted in the creation of new and innovative activities at the Estrada Courts Community Center and served on the Board of the Los Angeles Legal Aid Foundation. She also served on the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) nationwide panel as a representative and held a seat on the Board of the California State-Wide Resident Management Corporation. Maria Del Angel participated in the lengthy process of selecting the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles’ Executive Director.
As a Commissioner for the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, she is responsible for Board of Commission actions not subject to veto by the City Council under City Proposition 5. Her responsibilities include formulating and establishing basic policies for the Housing Authority, authorizing borrowing, mortgaging, bonding, approving the Housing Authority’s annual budget, disbursing of funds, contracting and large expenditures, and adopting the Housing Authority’s personnel rules and regulations.
Maria Del Angel is the recipient of Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles for her hard work, dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents in public housing, as well as residents city-wide. She is also the recipient of a recognition award from the President of Calexico Council for the Housing Authority.
