HACLA Provides Housing Vouchers to Homeless Veterans (watch video)

Staff from the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center and agencies that provide housing services for veterans took part in a day-long housing fair to assist homeless veterans.

One of the key programs offered at the fair was the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Voucher Program, which provides permanent housing and ongoing case management treatment services for homeless veterans.

On this day, HACLA provided twelve homeless veterans with Section 8 HUD-VASH vouchers.  Along with receiving the vouchers, they  participated in an information briefing session to learn about the program, including their rights and responsibilities as tenants under the Section 8 program.  Fifty other veterans were interviewed for eligibility in the HUD-VASH program.

In 2008, HUD awarded 10,000 Section 8 HUD-VASH vouchers to Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) throughout the country to assist veterans who are homeless.  The HACLA was awarded 840 HUD-VASH vouchers, the second largest allocation in the nation.  To date, almost 200 vouchers have been issued and more than 50 veterans housed.  The HACLA continues to work with the VA to implement the program and help homeless veterans transition into permanent housing.
