Congress Urged to Consider Increased Public Housing Funds

A group of US senators and Congressmen are pushing for increased public housing appropriations.

Twenty-eight US Senators signed a letter written by Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, and Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, and sixty-eight Congressmen signed a similar letter initiated by Rep. Maxine Waters, D-CA. They are asking that Congress approve an additional $500 million for the Public Housing Capital Fund and an additional $500 million for the Public Housing Operating Fund. This added $1 billion would be provided in a supplemental appropriations bill if approved. It will serve as a second economic stimulus package for communities across the nation.

Congress reconvened this week after its summer recess and housing issues are an integral area of the appropriations that will need to be addressed before adjourning for the November elections.
