HACLA offers computer literacy training

Residents at Jordan Downs public housing development now have access to free computer literacy training classes at the community center.  This follows the installation of a high quality Wi-Fi network at the development.  Jordan Downs is the first public housing development in Southern California to be equipped with wireless internet service.  Residents who sign up and complete the course will be eligbile to receive computers.

Classes started on January 11 and each class will last a week. Steve Thompson, Senior Job Developer at Los Angeles Opportunities Industrialization Center (LAOIC) who teaches the class said that the students need to get exposed and be proficient  on computers to find jobs, communicate and receive information.

Carrisa Archer, 24, who lives in Jordan Downs thanked the organizers.  “This will help a lot of families,” said Archer.  She plans to acquire computer skills to look for jobs.

Steve Thompson said he can see the participants are excited and want to learn.  In addition to teaching them how to browse on the internet, use programs such as Microsoft Word, he is also focusing on job search engines, developing a resume, and assisting residents with creating an e-mail address.

“I’m glad they have this program. I’m learning a lot and it’s very helpful,” said Dorothy Patterson, 31, who has lived in Jordan Downs for 8 years.  She plans to apply for office/clerical jobs. Patterson is also excited about keeping in touch with out of state family members via internet.
