Mothers Unite for Change

A Mother’s Day Reception
at the Jordan Downs Recreation Center on May 11 kicked-off a new initiative to bring change to the Jordan Downs community.  The launch of the support group - “Motivated Mothers of Jordan Downs” – reflects the level of commitment from the residents of this public housing development to help create a better environment for their children.  The special event included live music and dinner, but most importantly, a chance for fellowship.

Motivated Mothers of Jordan Downs aims to promote, empower and engage the mothers of Jordan Downs through education, opportunity and support. Like a village, the Moms of JD will unite  grandmothers, new mothers, neighbors and resources in an effort to bridge the gap between families and school, promote health and wellness, provide alternative parenting strategies, and raise successful children.

Representatives from the Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School, 92nd Street Elementary, Markham Middle School, Jordan High School, Kedren Community Health Center and Kaiser Permanente’s Watts Counseling and Learning Center informed the residents about their services.

The message John R. King II, Policy and Planning Director for HACLA shared with the residents was “Watts is worth it. Don’t let anybody tell you that you don’t deserve the best housing, best restaurants, best schools, best stores. Watts is worth it. It’s our turn now. It’s Watts’ turn and we are going to make it happen.”

Mr. King is overseeing the Human Captial Plan for the Jordan Downs redevelopment project.
The mothers also received updates and answers to their questions about the Jordan Downs redevelopment.
