Los Angeles - HACLA’s Board of Commissioners unanimously approved to appoint Douglas Guthrie as the agency’s new Interim President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Guthrie currently serves as the General Manger of the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD).
“Mr. Guthrie is an ideal leader at this time to address the immediate concerns relating to agency expenditures,” said HACLA Board Chair Mitchell Kamin. “His expertise and background in the housing industry will also assist the agency to move forward with its long term goals of improving the quality of life for our residents. We look forward to working with HUD, the Mayor’s office and the Controller’s office to put the right policies in place to make sure that this agency’s focus is on serving our communities.”
Mr. Guthrie has 40 years of experience in the housing industry, both the public and private sector. He was appointed the General Manager of the Los Angeles Housing Department in December 2009, where he oversees a staff of 600. In that capacity, he manages the City’s primary affordable housing development programs which address affordable housing, transit oriented development, supportive housing for the homeless.
Before joining the City of Los Angeles, Guthrie was the President of Kimball Hill Urban Centers in Chicago, Ill, a developer of large scale mixed use and mixed income housing developments. Mr. Guthrie also held various positions in the City of Chicago, including Chief Operating Officer of the Chicago Housing Authority and Deputy Housing Commissioner. He began his career working for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Mr. Guthrie received a BA Degree in sociology and Masters Degree in public administration from Kent State University in Ohio.
