HACLA Honors Chief Charlie Beck of the Los Angeles Police Department

The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles honored Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck on Thursday, May 24th at the monthly Board Meeting. HACLA President and CEO Doug Guthrie presented the award to Chief Beck in recognition of his decades of service to the residents of the City of Los Angeles as well as for his support and dedication to the Community Safety Partnership (CSP) Program.

Chief Charlie Beck has announced his retirement from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) after more than 40 years of service, including as Chief of Police since 2009. He knows the neighborhoods and knows them well having worked in them throughout his career.

Chief Beck has lived through the dramatic changes that have taken place in LAPD over the past 25 years and has been a catalyst and a leader in reshaping LAPD into a police force that more fully reflects the makeup of the community it serves and has reached out to neighborhoods to forge partnerships leading to better understanding and better law enforcement. Out of this approach came the partnership with HACLA in forming the Community Safety Partnership in 2011. A program in public housing communities that includes assigned patrol officers that get to know the community through community outreach, youth programs, safe passage and critical enforcement.

“Chief Beck has been an integral part of developing HACLA’s CSP Program and subsequent expansion. He has always been fully committed to its success. Chief Beck has embraced community policing to the benefit of the communities we serve. On behalf of HACLA and its residents, we would like to thank Chief Beck for his long-standing partnership and wish him the best in his next endeavors,” said Doug Guthrie.

“CSP Program has been a tremendous success. It is recognized throughout the country as the real core of the community policing. CSP has changed not only public safety in the Housing Developments but it also changed the way the Los Angeles Police Department thinks about its job,” said Chief Beck in his acceptance speech.
