Grand Opening of El Segundo and 127th Street Apartments

The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) joined Meta Housing Corporation for the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the El Segundo and 127th Street Apartments in Harbor Gateway. The newly constructed developments will provide 160 units of permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless families and individuals. Also in attendance were Mayor Eric Garcetti, County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and Councilmember Joe Buscaino among many others.

“Congratulations to everyone who moved in and thank you for letting us come to your home,” said Mayor Garcetti addressing the crowd. After the event, the Mayor met with several residents, including Lawrence McCue. Lawrence is a Marine Corps veteran, who used to live in his car. He now lives in a brand new unit with his wife Carla and their dog Oreo.

127th Street Apartments consists of 85 units designated for homeless or chronically-ill homeless individuals. The development is constructed using sustainable, “green building” principles and includes a variety of communal areas encouraging social interaction. On-site amenities feature clubhouses, classrooms and technology centers for educational training as well as a large kitchen to accommodate cooking classes and communal dining.

“Our goal is to end homelessness, not to manage it and all of us are a part of that solution. Homelessness is a national problem, not just a local problem and we are showing how to solve it, here in Los Angeles,” said Douglas Guthrie, HACLA President and CEO. Mr. Guthrie thanked the Mayor and Councilmember for their leadership and commitment to solving the homelessness crisis in the City.

El Segundo Boulevard Apartments is a 74-unit apartment community. This project is designed to accommodate homeless and chronically homeless disabled veterans and their families, as well as high utilizers of County services. This project also uses the latest in sustainable, “green building” principles and incorporates stormwater filtration planters to clean, treat and recycle all water used on-site. This property includes large community spaces, bicycle storage rooms, and a large outdoor courtyard.
