Home Public Housing

The Housing Services Department administers the Public Housing Program and oversees the management of fourteen (14) large HACLA owned public housing developments consisting of over 6,300 units located throughout the city of Los Angeles from the San Fernando Valley to San Pedro, Mar Vista to Boyle Heights. The properties are made up of townhome-style units ranging from one to five bedrooms.

The Public Housing Program receives subsidies from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide affordable housing to over 19,000 low income families, individuals, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Our residents represent the diverse demographic of Los Angeles.

As participants of the Public Housing Program, every household is required to complete an annual reexamination during which rent is determined based on the family’s annual income. Earned and unearned income for all household members will be adjusted based on deductions and allowances set forth by HUD.  For more information on how rent is determined for Public Housing residents, visit "How Your Rent is Determined."

In addition to housing, Public Housing residents have access to services and programs such as education development, employment training and placement, and recreational services provided by in-house staff or community partners. All public housing locations have a public elementary school immediately adjacent to or within a short walk.  In addition, each location has a Resident Advisory Council (RAC) elected by residents to represent each site in policy decisions and other matters to HACLA administration as well as to organize community events and activities.
