LOS ANGELES – On Thursday, July 21, 2022, The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) hosted the 10th Annual Build Hope Inc. Scholarship Celebration. With the recent surge of COVID cases in Los Angeles, the organizations decided to host this year’s event virtually once again. A total of 78 students, beginning or continuing their post-secondary education and reside in public or Section 8 housing communities in the City of Los Angeles, were awarded $114,500 in scholarships to support their academic endeavors. Amongst the list of schools students are attending are: UC Berkeley, UCLA, Yale, Spelman College, Stanford, and several California State Universities. The event was well attended by students, families, sponsors and colleagues and even included a few pre-recorded surprise messages from the LA Dodgers, including right fielder Mookie Betts and catcher Will Smith.

Welcome remarks were given by HACLA Board Chair, Cielo Castro, followed by HACLA President and CEO, Doug Guthrie. Nichol Whiteman, Chief Executive Officer of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, brought an inspirational Keynote address. Returning scholar, Jennifer Martinez of East Los Angeles College, shared a few encouraging words about going to college and how to manage school-life balance.

The scholarship event was made possible through the generosity of donors including LAPD’s Community Safety Partnership and HACLA’s Section 3 Partners: Reno & Cavanaugh, Berman Auditors, Goldfarb & Lipman, Xerox, Victor Orozco, Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Rudd & Romo and Nastich Law.

“These scholars are the first generation of the 21st Century,” said Build Hope Inc. President Jenny Scanlin. “Their thoughts, actions and beliefs will set the tone for what will define our world and our lives moving forward. We are excited to support their journey and realize their personal stories of hope and optimism.”
