03/11/2020Every Friday morning, the Nickerson Gardens Clubhouse on Compton Avenue hosts a community food giveaway. On Friday, July 31, 2020, special guest, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers stopped by for a surprise visit! “I just love being a part of it, but honestly, I don’t even think about it as giving as much as I get given to. I get welcomed here…we’re all working together doing something beautiful” said Flea.
The food giveaway was in collaboration with Watts Community Core, started by Tanya Dorsey, and GRYD Foundation. Dorsey started Watts Community Core (WCC) as a free boxing program to offer at-risk youth a different path. However, the program was put on hold after stay-at-home orders due to COVID-19. Since then, the program has shifted its efforts and uses the space as a place to feed the community, serving about 700 people on a weekly basis.
In addition to fresh produce, residents also received hot meals and masks. Residents said the giveaway is making a big difference during this difficult time.
